When an abnormal, malignant growth of cells appears in the prostate, it is called to be the occurrence of prostate cancer. There are four stages of prostate cancer:
- Stage I and Stage II: This is the stage where the tumour has been recently diagnosed but has not yet spread beyond the prostate. It is also called “localised prostate cancer”.
- Stage III: This is the stage where cancer has started spreading outside the prostate gland and has affected nearby tissues. It is also known as “locally advanced prostate cancer”
- Stage IV: This is the stage where cancer has started to spread outside the prostate to the other parts such as lymph nodes, bones, liver or lungs. It is also known as “advanced prostate cancer”.

Exploring the Life-Saving Medication for Metastatic Castration-Sensitive prostate Cancer: Apalutamide (Erleada)
On September 17, 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Apalutamide for male patients aged above 65 diagnosed with metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer. Initially, it was approved in 2018 for patients with non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.
Apalutamide is an androgen receptor inhibitor that binds directly to the ligand-binding domain of the androgen receptor-mediated transcription. Apalutamide inhibits androgen receptor nuclear translocation, inhibits DNA binding, and impedes androgen receptor-mediated transcription.
Taking the Life-Saving Medication
Apalutamide (Erleada) is an oral drug approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer. The recommended dose of apalutamide is 240 mg once a day and has to be consumed orally. Patients should also receive a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogue concurrently or have an option of bilateral orchiectomy.
If adverse or severe intolerable symptoms occur, we advise to pause the treatments until symptoms improve to the original grade and can be resumed at the same dose or a reduced dose of 180 mg or 120 mg.
